This is the opening of Act IV. The Soul (composer Elaine Kaplinsky) emerges slowly into the light while all the other Hildegurls taunt her as the Devil in multiple languages (Lisa Bielawa in French, Kitty Brazelton in Latin, Eve Beglarian in English and Elaine herself pre-recorded in German).

The Soul remains resolute and petitions Humility the queen of the Virtues to help her with her healing "medicine."

Devil:

Que es, aut unde venis?

Tu amplexata es me, et ego foras eduxi te.
Sed nunc in reversione tua confundis me;
ego autem pugna mea deiciam te!

What are you, and where do you come from?
You have been embraced by me, and I've taught you stuff. But now, you're turning back. You're confusing me.
I'm gonna hurl you down with my blows.

Modo autem, o illusor, pugno contra te.
Inde tu, o regina Humilitas,
tuo medicamine adiuva me!

I knew all my ways to be evil, and therefore I ran away from you;
now however, O deceiver, I fight against you.
Thence, you, O Queen Humility,
help me with your medicine.
